How To Choose the Right Dehumidifier Before the Rainy Season Hits

Keeping the Home Dry with a Dehumidifier

When the rainy season strikes, it can be nearly impossible to keep all of the moisture out of the home. It even finds its way inside via the air. Moisture in the air can cause numerous issues, including mold growth and health issues in some households. It makes the air harder to breathe and can even warp doors and other wood furniture in the home. It is essential to try to keep as much moisture out of the home as possible.

When it comes to removing moisture from the air, nothing works better than a whole-house dehumidifier. Of course, there are different types of dehumidifiers, so it’s important to know which is the best for the homeowner’s needs. Below is more information on how dehumidifiers work and how to choose the right one for the home.

How Can a Dehumidifier Prevent Mold?

Typically used in residential and commercial properties, a dehumidifier is an electrical appliance that removes moisture from the air. Many people don’t realize just how important this is for their health and the health of the home.
Below are some of the common benefits of using a dehumidifier during the rainy season:

Just by turning a dehumidifier on, homeowners are actively working to reduce mold growth in their homes. The unit works to pull in the moist air from the room and blows it through an extracting material. Most dehumidifiers use desiccant as the main extracting material. The desiccant is then left wet, and the dry air is pushed back out into the room. Then, the unit works to blow the desiccant dry to prepare for the next cycle.

Common Types of Dehumidifiers

Homeowners get the choice between two different types of dehumidifiers. They can choose to either go with a desiccant dehumidifier or a refrigerant dehumidifier.

The main difference between them is how moisture is extracted from the air once it passes through the system. The refrigerant dehumidifier is also known as the condenser dehumidifier because it uses a condenser and evaporator coil to remove moisture from the air. In contrast, the desiccant dehumidifiers use the desiccant material as the only extractor.

How To Choose the Right One

Both types of dehumidifiers work great inside any home. As a whole-house dehumidifier, it is usually integrated directly into the home’s ductwork for added convenience. This also removes the eyesore of having a unit placed inside of rooms and taking up unnecessary space. Whole-house dehumidifiers tend to be more efficient and environmentally friendly as well.

The main difference between the two dehumidifiers is that desiccant dehumidifiers tend to be better for all-year-round use because the refrigerant dehumidifier doesn’t work well in cold weather. That said, when the weather gets colder in the winter (unlike in other areas of the country, i.e., Florida), the air tends to get a little dry anyway, so the use of a dehumidifier isn’t as necessary. Another main difference is that out of the two types of dehumidifiers, the refrigerant dehumidifier tends to pull more moisture from the air.
